The fishing on Bahamas’ Acklins Island is a dream come true, especially for the angler that loves to wade. The flats are expansive, varied and prolific. Many, if not most, of the flats are hard-packed sand, crushed coral or solid marl. Mangrove flats, dazzling white beach flats, grassy bays and, extensive creeks create a spider web of perfect bonefish habitat. Not only are there huge populations of bonefish that ply these waters, Acklins also offers a respectable permit fishery. Certainly good enough you’ll want a rod rigged and ready.

Bain’s (named after the owner) Top Choice Bonefish Lodge hosts six anglers who want to fish the most remote areas of Acklins Island including Snug Corner, Fish Cays, and the Jamaica Cay area. Bain’s offers a very comfortable and friendly environment. The lodge serves delicious Bahamian food including lobster pasta and baked grouper. The rooms are large with quiet a/c units, mini-fridges and are serviced daily. Located on a beautiful white sand beach, the back porch is the perfect place to have a cocktail while you watch the sun sink in the west.

Many, if not most, of the cold fronts that affect the more northerly islands of Abaco, Andros and Grand Bahama don’t reach Acklins so the island can often be visited in the winter when wind and cold fronts plague the northern Islands. And, of course, the traditional months in the fall and spring offer excellent fly-angling opportunities.

Aside from traditional flats boats, Bain's has two 30' blue water boats (added fuel surcharge) for those that desire deep sea fishing or desire to access other remote fisheries.

For a week of remote un-pressured bone-fishing Bain’s is THE best deal in any flats-fishing offering in the Bahamas, if not the world. Excellent wade fishing, good food, comfortable rooms, hard-working guides, and a great price...now that’s worth experiencing!

Included: Airport transfer, lodging, meals, waters, lunch drinks, guided fishing.
Not Included: 10% VAT, Airfare, equipment, flies, alcohol, fishing license.

*Additional surcharge for some specific guide-requests (depending on drive-times) and center console boats to access remote fishing grounds.

*Please note: flights to Spring Point, Acklins only operate on
Wednesday and Saturday, therefore some itineraries/configurations are unavailable.

Royal Coachman Lodge - Bristol Bay, Alaska

Remote Alaska Lodge Fly Fishing trips for Salmon & Trout

We fish an arsenal of rivers, lakes and species. When everything is fishing well, we almost have too many fishing options available. Imagine trying to decide whether to fish for 25 pound pike on the surface, fresh sea lice covered salmon near the coast, hiking small creeks for arctic char in the mountain lake streams, rainbows and dollies on the Nushagak, Agulapak, Kvichak, etc., or a mixed bag grayling, lake trout and rainbows on our home river.  That’s the dilemma our guests must face each day.

By hosting just 10 – 12 guests per week, we have the flexibility to go where the fishing is the best for what you want to fish for, not where a pre-determined schedule needs you to go. Additionally, we have bear viewing, hiking, and kayaking options for those who would like a change of pace or just need a day to rest a sore fishing arm.

Why fish the Royal Coachman Lodge in Alaska?

How many fly out lodges in Alaska take only 10 guests a week?

We enjoy small lodges, and I think you will also. You get to know our crew, between fishing all day with us and eating dinner together, they become more your friends than just your guides. The better we know you, the better we can address your fishing expectations.

Our fisheries are uncrowded. You'll have the river all to yourself.

We focus on a wilderness experience, and strive to fish areas no one else does. We carry 9 different permits and leases to ensure that you will have outstanding fishing and the wilderness experience that has become so rare in many parts of Alaska.  We fish the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Wood Tikchik State Park, and Katmai National Park.

Our guide staff is the best our guests have fished with!

This is the most common comment on our guest critiques at the end of the week. Just to give you a feel for the staff, our guide staff averages over 12 seasons of experience. Scott Schumacher, our manager and guide, has been guiding in the Bristol Bay area since 1987.

Royal Coachman Lodge Fishing Itinerary

Arrival Day:

You will need to be in Anchorage on Sunday morning to catch a 1.5 hour charter flight to Dillingham.   This flight will leave around 11am out of Anchorage, arrive in Dillingham around 12:30  (please note that exact times will be confirmed on your final invoice letter 90 days before your arrival).  You will land at the Dillingham International Airport.

A Royal Coachman Lodge representative will meet you at the airport. You will then be transferred in the lodge’s van to Aleknagik, where our floatplanes will be waiting for you. This van transfer takes about 30 minutes.

We will pack the plane and leave for the lodge as soon as you arrive. Not everything fits in 2 Beaver loads, so we return for the remaining luggage. You will arrive at the lodge around 3:00 p.m., and the luggage flight will not get back to the lodge until roughly 6:00 pm.

If you are itching to go fishing when you arrive at the lodge, please grab your waders, wading boots and fly rod out of your bag in Dillingham and bring it with you on the first airplane load.

Sunday is not a guided fishing day.  We usually have a couple guides available to go through equipment and take guests out in front of the lodge. Upon arrival the manager will discuss the week's itinerary with you, check your licenses, and have guests sign waivers. Appetizers and a hearty dinner will be served around 6:30 p.m.

Monday – Saturday:

Full fishing days! You will generally have breakfast at 7:00 a.m. and depart at 8:00a.m. You will return around 6:00 p.m. after a full day of fishing. Dinner is usually served at 7:30 p.m. Repeat!

Departure Day:

We normally have a luggage run at 8:00 a.m., so you will need to pack in the morning before breakfast, which will be served at 8 a.m.. After the luggage planel eaves, you will have time to settle up with the manager for your bill which will
include: alcohol, fishing licenses, apparel purchased, and gratuities. The recommended gratuity is 10%-15% of the package price.  Please feel free to tip more or less depending on the services you have received.

After breakfast, you will depart in our Beavers for Dillingham. You will depart Dillingham on a private charter to Anchorage.

Copper River Lodge - Copper River, AK

Unlike other tundra rivers in Alaska offering large trout, the Copper River runs through a scenic river valley lined with groves of cottonwood, spruce, and birch. Aside from helping make it one of the most gorgeous rivers in the state, these trees offer the fly fishermen refuge from the relentless northern winds.

Probably one of the nicest surprises for anglers visiting the Copper River is its size and wadeability. Fishermen of any age or skill that desire the solitude of the river rather than the tutelage of the guide can comfortably and successfully fish on their own. The Copper River rainbow trout are some of the largest in Alaska, and are the reason the Copper River was the first river in the state designated a "fly fishing, catch and release only, trophy rainbow river." It is this designation that has kept the fishing so spectacular.

The Fishing
Clients will fish two to a boat. Caring for the fish you catch during your week is a critical component of our fishing program. All fishing for rainbow trout on the Copper is catch and release.

Anglers are allowed to keep 5 sockeye salmon during the month of July. We also have a lake boat to access the tributaries of Lake Iliamna. We use this boat especially to fish the Gibraltor River, which can be an exceptional fishery.

Accommodations
The lodge is a beautiful building overlooking the Copper River. Its spacious deck is ideal for enjoying spectacular sunsets. Inside, guests find a large living room and dining area complete with a bathroom. Additionally, there are four cozy guest cabins, each featuring a private deck with river views, heating, a queen bed, a single bed, and a private three-piece bathroom.

Rates
Rates are per-angler (double occupancy) for a seven-day/six-night stay. The rate includes float plane charters between Iliamna and the Lodge, all accommodations and meals throughout the week, taxes, as well as flies, leaders, tippet, and guide services.

Gear
We recommend using a 5 or 6 weight rod for trout and an 8 or 9 weight rod for salmon (July only). Make sure that your fly reels are well-matched to your rods and have a sturdy drag system.

For both trout and salmon, use floating lines. It's advisable to bring at least three 9-foot tapered leaders of 1X strength. Tippet spools in 0X, 1X, and 2X are optional but recommended.

Why Copper River Lodge?
The Copper River Lodge has the distinct advantage of being a small operation located right on the river. This allows us to cater to both the serious and the more laid back fisherman. What most distinguishes our lodge from the others is our guest capacity and our professional guide staff.

There are only six guests a week at our lodge. We understand that flexibility is the key to any vacation. If you want to sleep in and fish a little later, or see another stretch of river, your yearnings will never be far from reality.

Arrival Day
Your departure to Iliamna is in the mid afternoon. From Iliamna you will take a floatplane shuttle to the lodge. You will arrive at the lodge in the early evening in time for dinner.

Monday - Friday
You will usually have breakfast at 8:00 am with departure for fishing at 9:00 am. You will have lunch on the river and will return to the lodge at 7:00 pm. Dinner will follow at 8:00 pm.

Departure Day
You can fish on Saturday, have lunch and then depart on the floatplane at roughly mid afternoon. You will arrive into Iliamna in time for the mid afternoon flight which will get you into Anchorage in the early evening in time to catch a red eye flight.

The newly completed Red Bay Sunset Lodge is the culmination of a dream by well known flats guide Benry Smith. For many years Benry shuttled clients from the east side of Andros Island to the remote flats of Red Bay. The abundant and unpressured schools of Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit that lived there readily justified the one hour trip.

However, Benry knew there was a better way and following in the footsteps of his dad “Crazy Charlie Smith” he began the process of acquiring the permits and raising the money to begin building the first lodge on the west side of North Andros Island.

Benry has just completed the construction of The Red Bay Sunset Lodge, the only lodge of it’s kind on the entire west coast of North Andros, it boasts three private rooms on the water and will comfortably sleep six. A quaint dining room easily accommodates clients and guides with authentic Bahamian dishes and complimentary wine and beer.

If you are looking for night life after your day on the water, keep looking - this isn’t the place for you. However, if you want to fish hard, eat well, sleep sound and – then do it all over again the Red bay Sunset Lodge is the best the Bahamas has to offer.

Anglers staying at The Red Bay Sunset Lodge have unlimited flats on the west side of Andros at their finger tips as well as miles of flats in the Joulter Cays just a few minutes north of the lodge. The primary fish are Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit but the west Andros flats are home to a wide variety marine life including Mutton Snapper, Barracuda, sharks, rays, turtles etc, many of which will readily attack a fly.

What’s Included:

  • All accommodations at the lodge including All VAT taxes and resort fees.

Located 3 hours East of Pittsburgh, near Waynesboro, PA, Antietam Outfitters owns and has exclusive access to over two miles of outstanding trout water on the East Branch of Antietam Creek and its major tributary Red Run. Their waters have their beginning on South Mountain, flowing into the Cumberland Valley, influenced strongly by a large number of limestone springs.

As a result of this mix, they have aquatics that combine the best of both limestone and freestone streams. A multitude of Wild Brown Trout can be found in both Red Run and the Antietam. Rainbows and occasional Brook Trout are in their waters. May and June have outstanding dry fly fishing, starting with Sulphurs and ending with Yellow Drakes.

Their season begins with nymph and streamer fishing, with some early dry fly action on Blue Wing Olives on a cloudy day. This is a good time to bring in a Brown of 20" or more!

May and June bring great fishing; a typical morning can start with nymphs or a streamer, then later in the day turn into dry fly action on caddis or mayflies.

In mid-summer, with the exception of some caddis, the hatches are mostly over, but very good dry fly fishing begins with ants, hoppers, and other terrestrials.

Fall brings the opportunity to catch large, colorful Browns moving upstream heading for the many small tributaries to spawn.

Welcome to the Royal Bighorn Club!

Flowing through some of the West’s wildest country, the Bighorn emerges from Yellowtail Canyon below the Yellowtail Dam in Fort Smith, MT.  The Bighorn River is one of the great trout rivers of the world.  It is known for prolific hatches and truly stunning dry fly fishing for selective trout. We hope you will come join us!

Originally stocked with rainbow and cutthroat trout shortly after the dam was constructed in the mid-60’s, today, the river supports a self-sustaining population of wild brown and rainbow trout with the upper stretches of the river supporting as many as 6,000 trout per mile!

The trout and the insect life grow quickly and provide exceptional fishing all year. The average size of Bighorn trout is in the 14 to 16-inch range, with many fish running close to 20 inches, and the big fish being as large as 28 inches. The consistent water temperature supports a very diverse and prolific food base for trout, that consists of midges, various mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, crustaceans such as scuds and sow bugs, aquatic worms, leeches and minnow varieties. Terrestrial insects such as grasshoppers, beetles and ants are also important food items that are aggressively eaten by trout during the summer months. So, the trout have a variety of choices but are eating all the time.

As with all of our operations, Sweetwater works with some of the finest independent guides on the Bighorn. They are all adept teachers and will help you navigate the complexities of the hatches and the fishery. Your day will typically begin sub-surface nymph fishing in the morning followed by emerger fishing during mid-day, and conclude with rafts of insects finishing their life cycle in the waning hours of the day. It is truly a classroom for the trout fisherman.

Lodging at The Royal Bighorn

The Royal Bighorn Club is located on 40 acres, nestled in the cottonwoods on the banks of the Bighorn River.  From the deck or fire pit, only the river, waterfowl, and rustling leaves can be heard.  It is an escape from the stress and demands of our modern world.

There are six rooms for guests and a central lodge with a nice living room and bar, where the guests eat meals and socialize about days chasing trout. Evenings are spent enjoying a drink on the deck overlooking the river while our chef serves up appetizers before capping the day off with an exceptional meal. If you would like to fish a little more, our river in front of the lodge can offer some great evening dry fly fishing.

The lodge has an oversized deck, a screened in deck, a spacious living/dining room, small bar, bathroom, and a large professional kitchen.  If it happens to be a cold day, the fireplace will warm you up.

As a guest, you will have a private room with a private bath. Generally, we will be operating the lodge for six guests at a time, but we can accommodate up to twelve guests should you want to have a larger group.  How many lodges give their guests a private room?

The Royal Bighorn Club is located about 20 highway miles downstream from the Afterbay. The Royal Bighorn Club is the perfect home-base to explore one of MT’s most special trout fisheries.  You can sit by the campfire, listen to the birds, and watch as the sun sets over the Montana prairie.  The lodge itself is as much of a highlight as the fishing is!

Each guest room has an entrance on the parking lot side which has a bench, wader hooks, and rod holders.  On the other side, there is a sliding glass door that opens out to the river.  Many of our guests on nice evenings enjoy leaving the screen door open so they can fall asleep to the river and birds.  There is a queen and single bed in each room, private bath, and air conditioning and heat.  The private bath has a sink, separate heat, and a large tiled walk in shower.

The property is 40 acres of river bottom with deer and pheasants crowing in the distance.  We have a boat launch on the property.  It is the perfect end to a fishing day, as your guide can drop you off at the lodge riffle or deck while they go down to the boat ramp to take care of everything.  We also have a jet boat that you can use to depart for fishing right from the lodge.

Fishing the Bighorn River of Montana

The Bighorn River has more fish per mile than almost any river in Montana!

The Bighorn River always goes through cycles, and what a great stage of the cycle we should be in for in 2025!  There is currently an older age group of both Rainbows, and Browns.  This group of fish will more likely take you into the backing than not.  They are hot, fat fish that average 17-22 inches, with the big guys for the season reaching the upper 20's.  Now, there are not a ton of these fish, but there is a great younger-generation of Browns coming up, and they are growing fast.

These prolific fish will keep you very entertained, and it is a great sign for the future. The richness of bug life is ensuring that these guys are growing as quickly as possible.  We expect these fish to average between 14-16 inches by the spring. Historically the Bighorn River has a population dynamic of roughly 60% Browns and 40% rainbows, with the upper stretches of the Bighorn supporting as many as 6,000 trout per mile. As a tailwater, the Bighorn’s relatively stable water temperature provides the insects and fish in the river ideal feeding and growing conditions. The Bighorn River trout tend to proliferate year-round which keeps the Bighorn fish growing all year.

Average size of Bighorn trout is in the 14 –16 inch range, with many fish running close to 20 inches, and the big fish being as large as 28 inches. The high alkalinity and consistent water temperature support a very diverse and prolific food base for trout, consisting of midges, various mayfly and caddis genus, one stonefly genus, crustaceans such as scuds and sow bugs, aquatic worms, leeches and minnow varieties. Terrestrial insects such as grasshoppers, beetles and ants are also important food items that are aggressively eaten by trout during the summer months.

Insect hatches on the river are dramatic, in both size and duration. The first hatches of the year are midges, followed  by Blue-winged Olive and Pale Morning Dun mayflies, black and tan caddis, stoneflies, Tricorythodes mayflies, and ending with the Pseudocleon mayflies in the fall.

Now, do not take this the wrong way, but one of our favorite side trips at this lodge is going up to the Yellowtail Canyon and Reservoir.  We go up here with our jet boat and fish for big Carp on dry flies.  Not only is it one of the prettiest places you will fish, the slow take of Carp as it tries to get that fly in its mouth will test the most patient fisherman.  When they feel the hook, they will dive down and push your tippet to the max.  Do not try to land these fish too quickly!  It can add a great piece of variety to your time at the lodge. Smallmouth Bass fishing is also fun.

Welcome to Brooks Creek Ranch
"Where wilderness flyfishing and luxury meet"

Brooks Creek Ranch is Fernie’s newest luxury flyfishing lodge, located on the banks of the Elk River on a ranch surrounded by wilderness and in close proximity to British Columbia’s and Alberta’s best trout fisheries. Unlike south of the border, these northern fisheries are uncrowded and wild by comparison. Fewer boats and very houses on the river. You hear the sound of the river, not lawnmowers.

Every bit as special as the fishing, the facilities and property are above and beyond: single rooms overlooking it all, en suite bathrooms, expansive living areas including a sauna facility, hot tub, fire gazebo, game room and bar… all entirely off the grid on a riverfront ranch with no neighbors for miles. The sense of tranquility, solitude, level of personalized service, quality of cuisine and world-class trout fishing sets the stage for an extraordinary stay and one you will bound to repeat again and again.

Our fishing program at Brooks Creek is second to none. We are licensed to guide waters in the Fernie and Cranbrook area and Alberta's best tailwaters. Additionally, Brooks Creek Ranch has one mile of frontage directly on the Elk River for your enjoyment before or after your guided day of fishing... And a private launch to one of the Elk's finest blue ribbon stretches.

Fly fishing in Fernie offers enthusiasts a gateway to escaping the crowded rivers of the American West. The Elk River is BC's trout fishing mecca, offering a diverse range of stretches for floating and wading, each with a fraction of the usage compared to the US. BC's fishery management entity regulates its waters to ensure an uncrowded, wilderness experience.

Near Fernie, westslope cutthroat and bull trout are the primary catch. Beyond the Elk River valley, an array of smaller mountain streams, the St. Mary River, and alpine lakes await exploration, each providing different angling opportunities targeting rainbows, browns, and bull trout.

The bull trout fishery is a fun addition to our programs; witnessing a five to twenty-pound trout striking your streamer is truly amazing. Although we are licensed on the Wigwam River, we prefer to focus on these fish in the main rivers as it offers a more sporting experience. In smaller waters like the Wigwam or Lodgepole, bull trout tend to stack up for spawning and are particularly vulnerable. In our experience, targeting them on the larger rivers provides a more interesting angling experience.

Slightly further afield, Alberta's waters offer both freestone and tailwater opportunities for oversized rainbows, browns, cutthroat, and brook trout. While these waters don't generally provide the quantity of dry fly fishing that the Elk does, they offer amazing opportunities for rainbows and browns ranging deep into the twenty-inch range. A few days in Alberta are a must for anyone visiting Brooks Creek Ranch.

Although we are a new operation, we have over thirty years of experience in the angling business, running fly-fishing operations in truly remote locations around the world. Additionally, we are fortunate to have some of the most experienced guides in the business who are willing to be flexible with our fishing programs. They will do whatever it takes to provide you with the best angling experience possible, regardless of your level of fly-fishing experience. Whether it's helicopters, jet boats, rafts, or drift boats, we have access to them all within the bounds of our permits.

Brooks Creek Ranch is an eco-friendly, off-grid, luxury fishing lodge nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. What makes Brooks Creek Ranch unique are the principles that guide everything from the fishing, lodging, cuisine, adventures and everything else we do.

Sample itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Brooks Creek in the afternoon. Unpack, relax, explore the ranch or fish on your own if desirable. Appetizers and dinner.
Day 2-6: Breakfast at 7am. Full day of fishing. Return for appetizers and dinner.
Day 7: After breakfast, depart for home.

The northern tip of the Abaco Islands may be the last great stronghold of remarkable bone-fishing in the Bahamas. Not only is Little Abaco remote and virtually unfished, but this area is relatively easy to get to compared to locations farther afield.

Providing access to thirty-so miles of flats to the south and nearly twice that distance in ocean-side islands and flats to the north and west, Little Abaco offers a variety that many other locations in the Bahamas cannot. Combine the vast opportunities available with the simple fact that the next nearest fishing lodge lies more than fifty-miles away, the three-guide crew at Little Abaco Bonefish Lodge have unprecedented and unfettered access to a seemingly endless array of choices to pursue un-pressured fish.

Having recently relocated their operation from Water Cay (on the north end of Grand Bahama) to the quaint community of Crown Haven, Little Abaco Bonefish Lodge is strategically positioned to access the vast area surrounding the island's northern coast. The small, humble lodge, which houses up to six anglers, is owned and operated by master bonefish guide Sidney Thomas and his wife Ketta. In their new "home waters" location, Sid and Ketta are happy to be able to share the fisheries of Sidney's youth with their guests. The lodge encompasses the very-same family home that Sidney grew up in years ago.

Guests are treated to a overwhelmingly "real" Bahamas immersion when visiting Little Abaco. The experience offered at Little Abaco is akin to billeting in a Bahamian family's home. Ketta not only provides authentic and comfortable Bahamian cuisine, but hosts guests with a gregarious, welcoming and lovable character.

Sidney takes his craft seriously and has a skillset difficult to match in the industry. He has been able to impart a lot of his knowledge to the father/son due of Greg and Dominick Rolle who round out the three-guide crew. The veteran guides exude knowledge, keen eyesight and a highly professional manner that rank them as some of the best guides we have come across in the Bahamas.

Fishing out of small Beavertail skiffs that draft very little water, anglers will be able to choose to pursue fish from the bow of the skiff or decide to hop out and wade when conditions merit. Only a few of Little Abaco's flats are "soft" and muddy whereas the bulk of the flats encountered are firm white sand bottoms - perfect for the wade fishing enthusiast.

Additionally, the guides at Little Abaco are well versed at "chasing tides". Due to the terrain in this area, there can be as much as a three hour deflection in tides between the flats on the inside versus those that lay on the outside. This provides opportunities to be fishing during low tide multiple times per day. Depending on the conditions, Sidney and his crew can launch the boats within view of the lodge, or trailer the skiffs to other nearby regions of the island.

Included: Lodging, meals, guided fishing, airport transfer.
Not Included: Airfare to the Bahamas, Guide & staff gratuities, fishing license, alcohol, equipment/flies, 10% VAT (value added tax).

The Lodge

We built four spacious duplex cottages designed for privacy and minimal intrusion from neighbors and a main lodge designed for conviviality. All of the buildings are divided by a thick growth of trees and shrubs for privacy, connected by pathways and surrounded by meticulously landscaped lawns and flowerbeds.

Each of the four bungalows is divided into two suites, separated by a thick soundproof wall. The eight suites all have high cypress ceilings and a bedroom, a sitting room, an oversized bathroom and a private porch overlooking the Middle Bight. Access to the porch is through sliding glass doors from the bedroom, where two queen size beds face the sea. We can accommodate a maximum of 16 guests, a comfortable number to ensure high quality service and management’s personal attention.

It is a short walk to the main lodge. As you enter through the front door, there is a small shop and office to the right. Here you will find telephones and a laptop computer with wireless high speed Internet for your use. The rest of the lodge is open with a large bar and sitting area at one end and the dining area and entrance to the kitchen at the other. There are also bathroom facilities for men and women. The dining area opens out on to a large veranda overlooking Middle Bight followed by a few steps down to the patios and a few more steps down to the attractive wooden dock. This dock is where guests are picked up by our guides each morning and dropped off in the afternoon, and where many evenings are spent fishing for sharks.

At the west end of the property there is a small sand beach at the end of a seawall built of native limestone. A jetty, also built of native limestone is the best place on our property to practice a few casts. The chairs and lounges in the thatch roof gazebo at the other end of the seawall is the place to watch the spectacular sunset at the end of a day of adventure.

The lodge is one of the finest facilities in the Bahamas and is immaculately maintained by Liz and Alton Bain. They are part owners of the operation and their attention to detail is evident throughout the property. It is a wonderful place to relax after a great day on the water.

The Fishing

Andros Island, the largest of The Bahama Islands, is actually several islands of which there are three main inhabited islands: North Andros, South Andros and Mangrove Cay. Mangrove Cay is in between North Andros and South Andros and is surrounded by the waters of the Bights, wide and meandering waterways that bisect Andros from east to west. The Bights, known as the North, Middle and South Bight are themselves dotted with countless uninhabited cays and islets with shallow shores.

One huge flat on the West Side of Andros Island “The Land of the Giants” has incredible numbers of very large fish can be found here on a consistent basis.

Mangrove Cay Club is located on the north shore of Mangrove Cay which is the southshore of the Middle Bight. The lodge is tucked just inside the Bight far enough from the windward east side of the island to provide us with sheltered access to the flats and estuaries of our fishery.

We chose this location to give us water access to mile after mile of prime bonefish water without ever having to trailer a boat to a launch point or take a rough boat ride in the open ocean. We have access to all of the waters of the Bights, the eastern flats and the remote and legendary West Side.

It is widely known that bonefish follow the tides, using them to feed in shallow water. Tides on Andros behave in an odd way that works to our advantage. When the tide is low and rising on the east side, it is high and falling on the west side and vice versa. This gives our guides the advantage of being able to move through the Bights all day, never leaving you sitting on a shoreline waiting for the tide to “be right”.

There is no tide or moon phase that cannot be successfully fished at Mangrove Cay Club.

Andros bonefish are plentiful and average 3 to 5 pounds with regular appearances of fish 6 to 10 pounds. Several 11, 12 and 13 pound fish are landed every season. Our daily recorded statistics prove that the waters just minutes away from the lodge are equally productive in both size and numbers. In fact, some of the largest fish have been taken within sight of the Mangrove Cay Club just across the Bight around Big Wood Cay and Moxey Creek.

Bonefish are seen in schools of anywhere from a few fish to very large numbers, often in the hundreds. Large fish tend to travel in singles and doubles although they can hang out in large schools with smaller fish.

The Bights and West Side of Andros have soft bottoms and are best fished from the bow of the skiff. Wading is done on hard, sandy bottomed flats which are all located on the eastern shores and the south west of Andros.

Guides are rotated during your stay, and you can generally expect a new guide to be assigned to you every third fishing day. The rotation is a good way to match guides with guests and provides the opportunity to enjoy old favorites, as well as learn from different guides during your week.

We have boat access to the North, Middle and South Bights, the north and south West Side, the eastern flats and the Southwest cays of Andros. We are frequently asked if guides are assigned to certain areas to fish. The answer is no – the area is so vast there is no need for this restriction.

Your assigned guide will choose the flats you will fish from an almost unlimited number of options and his choices are based on tides, wind, weather and where experience tells him he will find fish. Please note that, if you have a preference of which type of fishing you prefer (wading or boat fishing), you should let both your guide and Liz know before you go out so your guide can plan accordingly.

Most fishing is done from the bow of the boat giving you and your guide the elevation to see fish and the mobility to move from flat to flat.

For some anglers, wading is the preferred option. It may be your choice to wade alone or with your guide. Let your guide know, and he can plan to include as much or as little wading in your day as you desire.

Occasionally, wind can make fishing from the boat impractical and even getting to the flats uncomfortable. On these days, we have the option of using The Big Boat (our 26’ twin hull with twin 150 hp engines) as a ferry to transport you and guides to lee shores and creeks for wading. This program has saved the day when many of our guests were resigned to a good book or a day at the tying table. These ventures can be very satisfying – in February of this year an 11# bonefish was caught, minutes from the lodge on a day that most lodges could not even get to the flats.

Example of our Daily Schedule

About the time you pour your first cup of coffee, Iyke and his staff have been in the kitchen for a couple of hours and the guides and the dock master are on the dock preparing the boats for the day. Coolers, drinking water and boat equipment are all ready to be picked up by the guides. The guides bring the boats to the main dock in front of the lodge dining room and set up the coolers, ready to load your lunch and drinks.

On your first day of fishing, you will be introduced to your guide, who will assist you with setting up your gear and selecting your flies. He will help you put your lunch and drinks in his cooler and will ensure that all gear is loaded securely into the boat.

  • 6:15 a.m. – Coffee/Tea basket delivered to your porch
  • 6:30 a.m. – Coffee, tea, juice and cold breakfast selections
  • 7:00 a.m. – Hot breakfast and pack-your-own lunch
  • 8:00 a.m. – Depart from lodge dock for guided fishing
  • 4:00 p.m. – Arrive back at the lodge dock
  • 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. – Bar snacks, drinks, shower and relax
  • 6:00 p.m. – Hors d’oeuvres
  • 7:00 p.m. – Dinner
  • Anytime – Cold beer, cocktails, snacks.

Other Activities

While Mangrove Cay Club is primarily a fishing lodge, Mangrove Cay is a wonderful place to spend some non-fishing time as well. During your stay, you are welcome to use the lodge beach cruisers to explore Mangrove Cay, the local town, which has a nice seaside bar as well as some very colorful characters: sponge fishermen who are happy to show you their catch. Bahamians are very devout people and the town also has some very picturesque churches that are spread throughout the town.

For those of you seeking to stay in shape while you are at Mangrove, the island is a wonderful place to run. We do encourage you to run in the morning, however, as it can get pretty warm in the afternoon.

Andros Island is home to the world’s third largest coral reef, a few short miles off the eastern coast. This reef structure, along with Mangrove’s abundant blue holes, provide wonderful diving opportunities. We work with a local divemaster and are happy to arrange a diving trip for you. There is an extra charge for this, and you can pay the divemaster directly.

If you would like to snorkel, the lodge has some snorkel equipment that you can take with you on your fishing trip. You may want to bring your own fins and borrow a mask and snorkel from us. Just let your guide and Liz know that you want to snorkel. It makes for a great, refreshing break from fishing. There are coral heads between the shore and the reef that offer a fabulously diverse snorkeling experience in about 15 feet of water.

Like many marine environments, Mangrove is home to a great variety of birdlife. We encourage you to bring binoculars with you to add to your life list of birds. There are bird books at the lodge

Sweetwater Travel pioneered Taimen fishing in Mongolia. After nearly 30 years, and hundreds of happy fishermen, Mongolia remains one of our favorite fly fishing destinations in the world. Sweetwater has refined its operation and offers unrivaled expertise and comfort for the fly fisherman. After all, if you are traveling all the way to Mongolia to fish, why wouldn’t you fish with the only group of guides who have been in Mongolia every year since 1995? In our 28 years in Mongolia, we have broken just about every world record for Taimen on a fly rod. Simply put, there is no other place in Mongolia where you have a better chance to catch, and release, the fish of a lifetime.

Why Mongolia Taimen Camps?
For most, just the opportunity to experience a pristine landscape, undeveloped river valleys lined with healthy forests or a pair of Mongolian riders driving their stock through a river meadow on a crisp fall morning is enough. But for the fly fishermen, Mongolia makes a great trip even better; it is home to the world’s largest trout that will attack your skated dry flies.

The Fishing
Clients will fish two to a boat. Our guide staff at the camps consist of highly experienced guides, who are professionals and well respected in the fly fishing world. They are very personable and will do everything possible to make your fishing vacation in Mongolia a memorable one. During the week, you will fish for impossibly large Taimen and the Asian trout - the Lenok, with dry flies. This past season was a really great one, and we are expecting 2025 to be a great season.

Our outfitter’s permits are on the Eg River and the Ur River in north-central Mongolia. Both rivers are a fly fisherman's dream. They are clear and easy to wade – even the banks are easy walking – and range in size from 40 to 120 feet wide. It is hard to imagine that a fish as large as the Taimen can live in these waters. In fact, one of our largest Taimen yet, a 60-inch fish, was taken on a mouse pattern in a particularly narrow stretch of river after we watched it eat a duck.

Water conditions in Mongolia are generally quite stable. However, if the headwaters of our rivers do receive a heavy rain, off-color water conditions are possible. In the past, we have found that fishing is still possible in off -- color conditions and that the rivers generally clear quickly.

Gear
We recommend 3, 4, or 5 WT rods for Lenok (bring floating line only). Bring 8, 9, or 10 WT’s for Taimen (bring floating, sink-tip and sinking lines). Guides will have all the leader and tippet that you will need for fishing.

Accommodations
Fishermen will stay in traditional Mongolian Gers, which are tents made of felt wrapped around a collapsible wooden frame. They are 9 feet high and 18 feet in diameter, much larger than standard wall tents, and are equipped with framed full-length single beds, ample room for storing gear, and an area to sit down & relax by a wood stove. Each Ger accommodates 2 fishermen.
